Core versus headline
Stripping out food and energy is not a trick to flatter the data. It isolates the persistent component policymakers can actually influence. Energy spikes fade; services inflation tends to stick.
The composition matters
Two economies can print the same inflation rate while facing opposite problems. One driven by wages and services is a very different policy challenge than one driven by a one-off supply shock.
